5.
В.В. Верховых.

On the question about the possibility of tobacco growing in
Samara area Natalya answered that she couldn’t be totally
sure in it because of often spring frosts that can appear
even on flood-lands near
Zhigulevskoye sea and Kuibyshevsky reservoir. She suggested
the higher possibility of success in more southern region,
perhaps in Volgograd or Saratov area that border upon Samara
area. The average temperatures of May and September are higher
there.

Samara is an educational and industrial centre; military industry
is especially well developed.
3. October,18
Meeting with JSC Tobacco Factory “Samarskaya”.
The general director Gennady Efremov after getting general
information about our project approved it in whole. Before
leaving Mr Efremov asked manager on tobacco supply Lena A.
Belyak, the chief tobacco master Svetlana Pavlova and commercial
director Yevgeny I. Abalymov to discuss with me and with Vladimir
the details of the project. The factory is interested in project
a lot because they see in it the opportunities of increasing
their influence on tobacco market. The factory is now in the
process of restructuring and it is looking for the possibilities
of getting cheaper tobacco of higher quality. They want to
create new trademarks. Also the factory wants to substitute
the Moldavian tobacco sorts and other sorts they use for the
new ones. Few years ago they regarded the opportunity of producing
tobacco leaves themselves, they even experimented with planting
few examples of Moldavian tobacco. The factory got positive
results but they were not satisfied with the quality of tobacco
leaves.
The factory manufactures 50% of non-filter cigarettes and
50% of cigarettes with filter, so they need both high quality
tobacco and cheaper one. For that reason they want to know
of which category is our variety that we sent from Greece
(NC 71).
They want to test as many varieties of tobaccos as it is possible
and they want to look carefully after their growing in Samara
area.
The factory offered to buy next year for the first year trials
10 tons of Virginia and 1 ton of Burley.
They are ready to double the international price - $2/kilo
for the first year and they are ready to pay next season $4/kilo
because they want to support this experiment very much. Also
they are thinking over installing of curing barns on the territory
of their factory.
The factory thinks that it would be more convenient for them
not to work with farmers directly but via the representative
of farmer’s interests.
The factory needs:
1. the data of chemical analyses of varieties of Virginia
and Burley;
2. samples of Burley (3-4 leaves);
3. prospects about curing barns and their prices; more information
about the technology of processing;
4. samples of seeds of 10 varieties of Burley and 10 varieties
of Virginia.
We invited the representatives of tobacco
factory to the exhibition in November.
During business lunch with Yevgeny and Lena they promised
that they would do everything depending on them to come.

The trip from Samara to Shigonsky area. The
most intresting places from the point of tobacco-growing are
lands around Tolyatti (Тольятти) near Kuibyshevsky reservoir
and Vyselki (Выселки) in Shigonsky area.
They cultivate there corn and sunflower. Black organic soils
and good warehouse in Vyselky are perfect for drying tobacco
leaves.

young specialist and runs his enterprise very professionally.
From 1996 to1998– after graduating the Agricultural Academy
in Samara -he was the main agronomist of the sanatorium, 3
years ago he became a director. He reacts very well to cooperation,
he us interested very much in any new ideas. He works with
2 very experienced agronomists. One of them offered to use
in greenhouses the technology of planting vegetables on the
straw packs.
Alexander is responsible for 5 greenhouses, 800 sq.m. each
and for 29 hectares of fields . They plant spices (lavander
etc), cucumbers (10 tons from greenhouse during the season)
and tomatoes in greenhouses. They start sowing tomatoes at
the end of January and transplant seedlings into the greenhouses
at the end of February. In summer they transplant seedlings
outside in June.
Besides stationary greenhouses made from glass and steel with
hot water heating they have summer greenhouses made from plastic
with radiators. They have also rather good warehouse for their
production.
The fields are next to the river, the temperatures are good.
They plant there potato, carrot, dill, cabbage, melons and
gourds.
